Learn to tame your guilty pleasures

Hello Hamster. Yes, I am talking to you. Don’t be surprised if I say that we are all hamsters running on a wheel constantly seeking stability. But guess what, we have an advantage over that pitiable rat, and that advantage is to have control over our emotions.

There is a very thin line between momentary pleasures and constant joy. You often get baffled at learning that the contentment you get from within is cultivated and can’t be achieved overnight. Don’t misunderstand this ‘brief sparkle’ of dopamine with a steady rock of contentment.

Imagine you are struggling with Monday blues, like an ox overhauling the load constantly. Your boss is mad at you for not meeting the deadlines, you are procrastinating them for no reason. Your ‘me’ time is consumed by non-sense YouTube shorts and Instagram reels.

Yes, I know after reading this most of you see yourself as useless as a pen’s empty refill. After that never-ending week with the same old monotonous routine comes to an end, you get a call from your best buddy to share a drink.

Good Sunday evening booze shared with a long-lost friend, sharing your highs and lows. This itself is therapy. An unmatched experience, one of the richness one can own. This must be cherished thoroughly, or an evening where your wife and kids are in harmony with you. Indulging in shopping and buying that one favorite thing you all had on your wish list.

All these little highs of life are important, yet we should never forget the reality check. Enjoy every single moment but never let these little joys of life domesticate you, because the following Monday you will suffer like a storm tossing ship in a relentless sea, after seeing your boss and deadlines.

These small guilty pleasures are meant to be relished momentarily to keep you on track. Practice detachment and see the magic.
